Make a 2-minute video on living things.
Step 1: Start with Familiar Examples
Living things are all around us. To understand what makes something alive, we can begin with everyday examples.
Plants, animals, and people are living things because they carry out life processes. Rocks, toys, and water are not living things because they do not carry out these life processes.
Step 2: Look for Signs of Life
Living things share important signs of life. They grow, take in food or make food, use energy, respond to their surroundings, and can produce more of their own kind.
These characteristics help us decide whether something is living or nonliving.
Step 3: Connect Needs to Survival
Because living things grow and use energy, they must get what they need from the world around them.
Most living things need water, air, food or sunlight, and a suitable place to live. These basic needs help living things stay alive.
Step 4: Compare Different Living Things
Different living things do not all live in the same way.
A fish needs water as its home. A bird needs air and space to move. A plant needs sunlight to make its food.
Even though their needs may look different, all living things depend on their environment to survive.
Step 5: Decide Living or Nonliving
To decide whether something is living, we can ask if it carries out life processes and depends on basic needs for survival.
Something is living if it grows, uses energy, responds to its surroundings, and can reproduce. Something nonliving does not grow, use energy, respond, or reproduce.
Living things include plants, animals, and people. Nonliving things include rocks, toys, and water.
